Dear Students,

For your second paragraph assignment, you will be interviewing (and be interviewed by) another student in the class.

Please write a paragraph about that student. Make sure that you capture something -- not everything -- important about your colleague. Don't try to say everything. Narrow the focus to one critical quality.

That focus will allow you to provide the kind of evidence and detail that makes the paragraph real and engaging.

For example, let's say the student is on the golf team. Surely, the student experienced one moment that ensured that he or she would be a golfer forever. Describe the student's interest, but make it real. Capture that moment.

  1. Freddy Wynne, born in New Jersey on the 4th of November 1993, has a passion for the Beautiful game. For 14 years counting Freddy has been playing soccer competitively with the same coach and team, and has been to many State Championships and Tournaments. Playing so long with the same team and coach has made them like a second family to Freddy. His coach is a like a second father to him; his mentor. A team grows and prospers together. Together is when they are at their best, this is true in both soccer and in life itself. For the first time in his life at OWU, Freddy is playing with a different team and a different coach, which is odd for him. But a;; the skills his coach taught him go with him to his new team, and he will lead OWU to greatness.

    1. A tremendous part of life is about discovering what your true passions are and what makes you happy. For Alexander Clumpkins, his passion is music. It wasn't until Alexander gave up his long lasting soccer career (11 years) in High School, when he discovered his love for playing the electric guitar and bass. Being coached by his father his entire life made it even more of a difficult decision. Unlike a majority of musicians, Alexander never learned the basic chords and can not read sheet music, but this is because Alexander jumped straight into playing songs. This proves that he is a truly gifted musician. Him and his friends started a band called Pineapple Dream, which was his new "team". Coming to OWU, Alexander and his band were forced to break up, but Alexander will continue to enjoy his new passion for music.

  2. You have not met a genuinely caring person until you have met Eric Baughman. He is out for others, and wants to spend his life giving back and helping in any way that he can. It was his physiology teacher in high school that first sparked Eric's interest in the complexities of the human body, which ultimately lead him to make the decision of becoming a Pre-medical major at Ohio Wesleyan. His friends attest to his love of logic, and his steady and intelligent nature, characteristics that not only earned him two promotions in two years at the King's Island concession stand, but will serve him well on his path to becoming a specialized physician.

Michael Mora Brenes, at just 19 years of age, has given back much of his time to help out his community. Michael was born and raised in a small town in Costa Rica, but, that did not stop him from helping everyone around him. He started out with small events, such as helping to clean beaches around him. Michael soon started doing more and more. From cleaning beaches, he started to plant trees and then helped at the Red Cross. After working with the Red Cross, he was able to enter into an organization. In Costa Rica this organization is known as 4S Organization for Youth, in the USA this organization is known as 4H. 4S is an agricultural based organization, which let Michael have no boundaries when helping. Because of 4S, he was able to travel to the USA for a month to volunteer at a national park that was going to be closed down by the government. By volunteering in event such as these, 4S gave him an award to be able to come to OWU.

  5. Family, friends, and music are what shape the life of Gabrielle Howes. Ever since second grade, when she first picked up the cello, she has been playing music. In high school it was the guitar and the piano and now she is seeking a degree in music in order to continue her passion. While she is proud of the fact that her hard work has taken her this far, she doesn’t claim all the credit. Her family and friends have been a central piece of her life, offering her the support and love that she has needed to make it through. She considers herself lucky for these relations and cherishes them more than anything. Music has given her direction in her life while love from friends and family has given her the strength to walk that path.

  6. Choosing the right college is easy. Right? Well no, if Aaron’s story means anything at all. Aaron is a sophomore who has transferred from another college called Mt. Union. Why was that? Well before that can be explained, it should be said the reason Aaron originally went to Mt. Union because it is a solid sports school. Aaron is a football player, before that a wrestler, and he comes from a football family, a football version of military family. However, that did not equate to Mt. Union being for him, as the only good thing about it, is the sports program. In addition to sports, also Aaron wants a true education, and not a mockery of one. Why? So in case he does not go professional, he has a fallback plan. This is why Aaron cane over to Ohio Wesleyan University where in spite of being a transfer he has made himself part of the community, and means to stay.

  7. Just talking to Dr. Burns for a short period of time, you can truly see his passion for the Perkins Observatory. Even with all his other work he needs to accomplish, he spends numerous hours there every single day. Sometimes he won't even return home until 1 or 2 o'clock in the morning. Being involved with the observatory comes with a large number of duties. Dr. Burns has to do tons of paperwork, check all the mail, lead tours and so much more. Although, all the time and effort is worth doing something he loves. His greatest joy in the observatory is leading the tours and watching people of all ages look through the eyepiece of the telescope. The best part is hearing all the different reactions, such as, "I can't believe it's real," or "Do you have a picture glued in the telescope?" The Perkins Observatory has made Dr. Burns continue and show his love for star gazing and astronomy.

  9. Every student at Ohio Wesleyan has a specific, interesting quality about them. For freshman, Peter Yoshita, trading card games are what makes him stick out. Peter has been playing card games such as Yugio and Magic the Gathering since he was a young boy. One may ask, "how does somebody become so interested in trading cards?" For Peter, it all started from watching T.V. shows. Yugio has been around for years and has gained a strong number of followers. Peter says his favorite Yugio card is called the "King Dragun". After taking the time to talk to Peter, I soon reallized he knows a lot of trivia about these card games. This shows that these card games are a big part of his life. In conclusion, Peter is an interesting young man with a truly interesting hobby

When it comes to helping vulnerable people, Samantha Sygier is the appropriate person to do it. She was born the 17th of November 1995, in a town called Panajachel, Guatemala. At a very young age, Samantha has been part of many extracurricular groups and social activities, which makes her a very active and multifaceted individual. Taking dance classes as a child allowed her to develop skills in many rhythms including: ballet, salsa, and pop. The qualities that best describe her are: humanistic and solidary. As part of “Mayan Families”, a nonprofit institution committed with the community, she has participated in several volunteer for people living in extreme poverty. Throughout her time serving the community, Samantha has helped impoverished people in multiple ways. For example, she has joined campaigns to sponsor students living in poverty and to build new houses for families of low income. Conclusively, it is without a doubt that majoring in Sociology at OWU will give her more opportunities to improve the quality of life for people who are of a greater social risk.

    Akil Khalid Goodridge
From swimming, to watching movies, to working out, to music production, it is hard to fit the diverse interests Akil has into one paragraph. While all of those hobbies help to make up Akil's character, his true passion is helping people. After spending time with his neighborhood Dentist, who is also a family friend, Akil was inspired to pursuit his longing to help people by following in his family friend's footsteps and become a dentist as well. However, before he can get on the fast track to fulfill this dream of helping people and major in Pre-Med, he must first help himself. He has chosen to be Undecided for the time being, just so he can make sure he's doing well with the difficult transition into college, before committing to Pre-Med. Nonetheless, I look forward to seeing what Akil Goodridge will accomplish in his life time. I'm sure whatever it is he decides to do, he will excel in it, and do great things.

Sarah Shulman, a nineteen year-old girl born and raised in Brooklyn, came to a small town, here in Delaware to pursue her dreams of working in early childhood education. The first question I chose to ask her was what would be the key element that someone should remember about her. She responded “They would remember, although I might seem composed at first, I am the total opposite. I care about everything and anything. I already care about someone even when I just meet them.” She chose to pursue childhood education, because she has always loved kids. She wants to experience with young minds, and to teach them the rules of how to be successful in the real world. This is a dream that is very real for her. Sarah wants to devote her whole life to this profession, and by interviewing her; I can honestly say that she would be perfect for this career. She has a personality that kids will love, and really believes in them. Sarah seems super psyched for her future, and I know she will make OWU proud.

  15. Two weeks ago, Jemil Ahmed sat down on a flight to the United States from Ethiopia. It was his first time flying, nonetheless flying by himself. Thirty two hours later Jemil stepped foot on American soil for the first time in his life. Some might be scared coming to a place they've never been to before, not Jemil. He wasn't scared at all; he was driven. Driven to get a better education in medicine. If it were not for Jemil's research and the constant asking of his parents to go to America, it never would have happened. He has a dream and is on his way to accomplishing it.

  16. Hats off to Dalia Lorenzo, a college freshman in the Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU) class of 2017. Dalia said that she decided to study at OWU, because it was where she felt comfortable. She is from Los Angeles, California, and sshe likes to read, hang out watch movies with her friends (even though she doesn't have a favorite movie), and volunteering, and studying science, specifically Biology. "People don't [always] see it, but science is all around us..." said Dalia. With the experience of being a tutor, and a TA under her belt, she wants to eventually become an elementary school science teacher.

  17. Nick Tobias is a freshman this year that plans to major in Art Education and minor in Ceramics. His life has always been influenced by a teachers opinion, his whole family happens to all be in the educating business. However, Nick has picked up an interesting talent; he picked up soccer. Soccer became his favorite sport around when he was six, ever since then he has been playing. He played as goalie throughout middle school and decided that it wasn’t the best position for him. So freshman year in high school he switched to forward and mid-field. He felt they would be better for him because it would be more of a challenge. Along with the high school team, he played for a traveling Academy team. Unfortunately, the Academy changed their rules. Instead of playing seven months, the team now had to play for ten months. As a result of this rule he chose to quit the high school team, he felt that there would be more of a competition in the Academy for him. In the long run that choice must have paid off because Nick is now the newest battling bishop for the Ohio Wesleyan University soccer team.

  18. The student I had to write about was Kelly Geck. She lived in Cleveland, Ohio. She plans on doubling majoring in Botany and Zoology. The most interesting thing we talked about was that she does Lionettes. At first, I had no idea what lionettes was, but then she explained it to me. Lionettes is part of a group in marching bands. The part that Kelly does is flagging. Kelly talked about her struggles with flagging when she first started to do flagging. She started her sophomore year. She was very new to flagging. She wanted to get better at it. So, she stayed after practices focusing on the skill of flagging. Junior year was a lot different for her. She had deal with girl clicks and other girl drama. Getting past the drama from junior, she became really good at flagging and started to do with ease her senior year. She started to create flag movements by herself and later showed the team. Her hard work finally paid off. Kelly became the captain of the flagging team. She realized with being captain other girls looked up to her. She helped the new freshmen and sophomore ladies with their flagging skill. She took the leadership of the team and embraced it.

  20. Interviewing my classmate Beau Michel, I had chills as he told me about his love for football. Beau is eighteen years old and came all the way from Tampa, Florida. His goal was to get a great education and play the game that he loves here at Ohio Wesleyan University. Beau is a multi-sport athlete, who has competed very successfully in both football and track and field in the past. He is planning on continuing his dominance. Why do I say dominance? When asking Beau about his past in football I learned that he was a state champion his junior year in High School! They were ranked 2nd in the nation with a clean 15-0 record! Beau just loves everything about the game of football and has played his whole life. He especially loves hitting people and the excitement of the game. Beau throws disk in track and runs to get better for his next season of football. Beau is excited to get onto the field and play as a Battling Bishop!

  21. Interviewing Emily really opened my eyes to what it would be like to move. Emily had previously live in a small town in China. She described life in China as very tough and school orientated. Her parents wanted better for her and wanted to give her the opportunity to capture the American Dream. So, for her high school years, Emily and her parents moved to San Francisco. knowing almost no english, Emily knew this would be a very challenging thing to do. she also knew that it was something she wanted to do and would really help improve her life and her future. I have grown up in the same house my whole life, I couldn't even imaging moving states, yet alone another country. Emily got through her first years of high school with the help of a couple people, her parents, friends, and mentor. Her mentor really played a big role in her transition to a new country. He helped her stay on school and really helped her with communicating to people. For Emily moving has started a new and better life for her. She said it has changed her for the better and loves it here in America. After living in California for a few years, Emily made new friends and found out about Ohio Wesleyan University. Upon visiting she knew that she wanted to spend the next 4 years as a Battling Bishop. Moving has taught Emily how to face change and adversity and she wants to continue her journey to attain the American dream!

Lindsay never joined cross-country until her freshman year of high school, where she made it on the Varsity team. All four years of her high school career she ran, two of which she was captain of her Varsity team. Though, at the moment, Lindsay cannot compete, due to a knee injury, she still continues to run and hopes and plans to run a half marathon or full one in the nearby future. She has not only continued to strive to continue her love of running, but has also at least inspired me that you should never give up on your goals and passions, no matter what.

Carson Bernard is a freshman at Ohio Wesleyan University. Carson hails from Davis, California, north of San Francisco. Carson is very interested in rugby and he plays in Columbus for the Columbus rugby club. Carson first played rugby when he was fifteen. He used to play football, but he had six concussions so rugby was the safer option because they use less pads. The Columbus Rugby club is a semi professional team so Carson is very good. He has two sisters. One of them is older than him and the other one is younger. His family is a close-knit family and they support him and his rugby . Carson is a very interesting young man who I had a pleasure to interview.

However, Isabella felt that line of work wouldn’t fulfill her desires of something new and exciting. Instead she chose to be lawyer so she could be in a position to see different clients and have a more exciting career.

  27. Jadé Giordani qualifies as an exceptional person, with great character, and a warm heart. Jadé comes from Chicago, Illinois. She has one younger sibling, a sister, whom she considers herself very different from. However, that does not mean they cannot get along. She likes to involve herself in a multitude of non-profits, and community work. She has worked at the Museum of Science and Chemistry in Chicago. She volunteers because she genuinely cares for others and wants to help as much as she possibly can. Even with all the activities Jadé does outside of school, she still makes time for her academics. After attending Ohio Wesleyan University she plans on applying to graduate school to further her studies in Chemistry Forensics. Her passions for this kind of work may be the result of her love of watching crime shows, and others such as Breaking Bad. From talking to Jadé, I have begun to admire her character and her desires to assist her community; while also bringing smiles to other people’s faces.

  28. The student I interviewed has always had a passion for the water. Even at a young age all she wanted to do was swim. She has participated in competition swimming and diving since the age of 7, but the mysteries of the ocean captivated her mind, body, and soul. The greatest time of her life was when she went snorkeling in the Bahamas. Gliding through the deep blue with an abundance of life surrounding her was so enticing that sometimes she didn't want to come up for air. On one encounter, she ended up at an extensive coral reef. The student went up for air in order to explore the reef further. When she went back down, from around the coral, came an enormous shark! Less than a yard away, it circled around her while she was paralyzed, not by fear, but in awe. The creature was so graceful and mysterious. This day was very significant in this student's life; it was the day she chose her career path. That student is me, and I decided to become a shark biologist.

Because of soccer, Kyle met his life mentor, who was also his soccer coach in the club. His coach influenced him a lot on making the decision to come to Ohio Wesleyan University.
